CPR Responds to NYPD Commissioner O’Neill’s Claims of Reform Accomplishments

In response to NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill claiming the department’s reform accomplishments are not being recognized by the public, Communities United for Police Reform released the following statement from spokesperson Monifa Bandele.

“New Yorkers will recognize change, but policing abuses by the NYPD continue day after day and neither Commissioner O’Neill nor Mayor de Blasio have done anything to address that by fixing the department’s broken accountability for misconduct and brutality and ending discriminatory broken windows policing. They have taken the city backwards on police transparency by taking steps beyond administrations of the past decades to hide police discipline and misconduct information. When communities still experience abuses, brutality and unjust killings by a police department that won’t hold its officers accountable, criticism will remain. Rather than memos and rhetoric on NYC’s sanctuary status or attempting to mislead the public with a multi-million dollar PR campaign, Commissioner O’Neill and Mayor de Blasio should take concrete action to end the discriminatory broken windows policing that puts New Yorkers at risk to Trump’s agenda and end policing abuses by changing the NYPD’s failed accountability.

About Communities United for Police Reform

Communities United for Police Reform (CPR) is an unprecedented campaign to end discriminatory policing practices in New York, and to build a lasting movement that promotes public safety and policing practices based on cooperation and respect– not discriminatory targeting and harassment.

CPR brings together a movement of community members, lawyers, researchers and activists to work for change. The partners in this campaign come from all 5 boroughs, from all walks of life and represent many of those unfairly targeted the most by the NYPD. CPR is fighting for reforms that will promote community safety while ensuring that the NYPD protects and serves all New Yorkers.
