NYC Mayor & NYPD Commissioner’s Rhetoric Not Matching Reality
NYPD Collaboration with ICE, Deception on NYPD/Broken Windows’ Contribution to Immigration Enforcement, Continued Brutality and Misconduct, Harassment of Muslim Officer
As Mayor de Blasio and Commissioner O’Neill prepare to tout February’s crime statistics, there are a range of incidents/examples that contradict their rhetoric. Such examples continue on a near-daily basis each month – see January, December, and November. The mayor and commissioner have taken no concrete action on police accountability, have taken regressive actions to hide police misconduct through self-serving reinterpretations of state law 50-a, and continue failing to address racial disparities in policing.

De Blasio continues to avoid the fact that broken windows policing, which targets communities of color and thus immigrant communities and that he continues to support, places New Yorkers at risk of ICE enforcement, particularly under the Trump administration’s expansive targeting. The NYPD went even so far to send out a legal officer to put out a misleading statement about turnstile jumping, as de Blasio and the NYPD continue to try obscuring the fact that their discriminatory enforcement actions contribute to ICE actions – the honoring of detainer requests is not the only way the city contributes to ICE activities. http://www.villagevoice.com/news/yes-new-yorkers-can-be-deported-for-jumping-a-turnstile-9719151

Low-level marijuana arrests increased in 2016 with large racial disparities, despite de Blasio’s repeated claims that the NYPD has ended the practice. Most recently in December on WNYC’s Brian Lehrer Show, de Blasio claimed “We were going to stop the things that were causing a rift between police and community. For example, we stopped arrest for low-level marijuana possession.” There were 18,136 such arrests in 2016.

A Muslim officer who alleges she was verbally and physically attacked by her colleagues and superiors for years and NYPD authorities ignored her reporting of the harassment was in the same Greenpoint, Brooklyn precinct under the command of Capt. Peter Rose, who was “not too concerned” about an increase in acquaintance rapes.
