CPR Slams de Blasio for Cover-Up on Garner, Calls for Truly External Investigations into Corrupted NYPD Disciplinary Investigations for Serious Misconduct

In response to Mayor de Blasio claiming that the killing of Eric Garner wasn’t as clear as the police killings of civilians in other cities and defending the NYPD only bringing charges against two officers in Garner’s killing, Communities United for Police Reform released the following statement from spokesperson Loyda Colon, Co-Director of the Justice Committee.

“It’s disgusting and disgraceful for Mayor de Blasio to have said that Eric Garner’s killing by the NYPD he controls, which the world saw on video, was less clear-cut of an injustice than police killings of civilians in other cities. For four years, Mayor de Blasio misled the public about needing to wait for DOJ, which other police departments across the country did not do when their officers killed civilians and were investigated by DOJ. It is a cover-up and corruption at the highest level when Mayor de Blasio defends the NYPD not bringing disciplinary charges against more than two officers, when more than five used force or failed to intervene in Garner’s killing, while others lied to cover it up and engaged in other misconduct. We call for the NYPD Inspector General and the New York City Council to investigate this cover-up into police misconduct surrounding the death of Eric Garner through the lens of a pattern that exists at NYPD, as evidenced by the ongoing lack of accountability for killings including of Delrawn Small and Saheed Vassell, as well as other serious misconduct. The NYPD’s internal investigations and failed disciplining of officers involved in other police killings, incidents of police brutality and sexual violence is systemically and fatally fraudulent, and a NYPD-appointed panel, staffed and resourced by the department, is inadequate. Today, New Yorkers should be ashamed of their mayor, because he is contributing to and responsible for injustices just like the president he so often denounces and uses as a boogey man.”
