Statement: CPR Responds to Mayor Adams’ Budget

Today, the Communities United for Police Reform released their official statement on Mayor Eric Adams’ Budget by Keli Young (she/her), spokesperson for Communities United for Police Reform:

“Budgets are moral documents, and the Mayor’s budget released yesterday reflects that the city values policing and criminalization over solutions that will actually improve the lives of New Yorkers across the city, especially Black, Latinx and other communities of color. These communities have been the most devastated by disinvestment and need solutions which address long-term public safety and health,” said Keli Young (she/her), spokesperson for Communities United for Police Reform. “Expanding the already-bloated NYPD budget and doubling down on policing practices that have for decades failed our communities will only result in increased risks of profiling, surveillance, and police violence for thousands of New Yorkers. The safest communities are the ones where residents have access to healthcare, housing, high quality education, good jobs, and green space without the threat of police abuse and violence. The Mayor and City Council need to make sure the budget reflects an investment in a New York that works for everyone."
