New Yorkers Rally at City Hall for Passage of Community Safety Act Bills by Council

On Monday, June 24, 2013, New Yorkers from across the five boroughs, representing the breadth of diverse communities of the city, gathered on the steps of City Hall to call on the New York City Council to swiftly pass the Discriminatory Profiling Ban and Independent NYPD Oversight bills of the Community Safety Act.

Alert: New Yorkers to Rally to Call for City Council Passage of Community Safety Act Bills

On Monday, June 24 at 10AM, New Yorkers from across the city will rally on the steps of City Hall to call on the New York City Council to pass key bills of the Community Safety Act, the End NYPD Discriminatory Profiling Act (Intro 1080) and the Independent NYPD Oversight Act (Intro 1079). These bills, introduced in their original version last year, are finally nearing a vote by the full City Council.

Hip Hop Star Yasiin Bey (fka Mos Def) releases PSA on stop-and-frisk

On May 21, 2013, Rap artist Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def, in conjunction with theCenter for Constitutional Rights a member organization of Communities United for Police Reform, released a public service announcement video featuring his song "Don't Tread on Me" and the voices of anonymous police officers as well as affected community members speaking out against the unconstitutional stop-and-frisk practices of the NYPD.

CPR to Co-sponsor Mayoral Candidates Forum on Community Safety

Communities United for Police Reform is sponsoring a Candidates Forum on Community Safety for the 2013 race for New York City Mayor on Thursday May 9, 2013, 5-7pm (doors open at 4pm) at the Riverside Church in Manhattan. With the question of "What will NYC's Next Mayor Do to Ensure that ALL New Yorkers are Safe", the Candidates Forum is co-sponsored by New York Amsterdam News, Gay City News, and GlobalGrind.com.

CPR Releases Statement on Speaker Christine Quinn's Public Safety Speech

Communities United for Police Reform released a statement in response to New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn’s announcement on April 24, 2013 that she will not support an amended version of the anti-profiling bill – Intro 800 – of the Community Safety Act pending in the City Council. CPR Holds Leadership Development Institute, January 2013

In January 2013, CPR launched the first Leadership Development Institute (LDI) to build the capacity of directly affected communities to hold the NYPD accountable. The LDI trained almost 30 individual members from nine organizations to conduct Know Your Rights workshops in their communities. Knowing our rights is the first step in protecting ourselves from discriminatory and abusive policing.
