On January 10, 2014, Communities United For Police Reform and members of the Community Safety Act Coalition gathered on the steps of City Hall to denounce the police union and the former Mayor's efforts to overturn the Discriminatory Profiling Ban of the Community Safety Act and announced the filing of amicus briefs in support of the New York City Council's defense of the Law (Local Law 71 of 2013). In 2013, police unions and the former Bloomberg Administration both filed legal challenges to the the law, which would expand protections against discriminatory police profiling and enable a private right of action to take the NYPD to court for discriminatory policies and practices. Under the law, for the first time, LGBT communities, youth, immigrants, residents of public housing and the homeless have protection from bias-based profiling. 35 New York City community, civil rights, legal aid, labour and faith organizations signed the amicus briefs. Mayor Bill de Blasio has promised to drop the city's appeal.
