On Tuesday, July 23, Mayor Mike Bloomberg vetoed the Community Safety Act bills that would ban discriminatory profiling in New York City (Intro 1080) and establish oversight of the NYPD (Intro 1079). Before vetoing both bills, the Mayor ignored calls by City Council Members to hold a public hearing to listen to the voices of New Yorkers affected by police profiling, discrimination, and lack of NYPD accountability. For a full statement from Communities United for Police Reform on the Mayor's veto, click here. The bills now head back to the City Council where Council Members will have an opportunity to override the veto. To take action (including contacting your Council Member) to ensure that the Mayor's veto is overridden, visit our take action page here.
