The world’s largest local union, with over 250,000 members in New York City, SEIU1199 United Healthcare Workers East, called on the New York City Council to pass the Community Safety Act package of reforms. In a Memorandum in Support, they declared, “to ensure effective policing and to protect the civil rights of New Yorkers, we strongly support and urge the swift passage of the Community Safety Act, Intro 1079 and Intro 1080...These two bills intend to restore a more positive relationship between the NYPD and those they serve.”
The memorandum also questioned the Bloomberg Administration's claims of Stop-and-Frisk’s effectiveness in reducing violence, noting that the number of victims of shootings remained steady between 2002 and 2011, despite an over 600% increase in the number of stops. In 2012, SEIU1199 members joined tens of thousands of other concerned New Yorkers in a Silent March down Fifth Avenue against racial profiling organized by 300 organizations from across the city.
