After New IG Report, de Blasio and Bratton Urged to Implement Real Disciplinary Reform at the NYPD

Communities United for Police Reform (CPR), a leading voice for reform at the NYPD, released the following statement today on the NYPD Inspector General’s new report:

“We applaud Inspector General Philip Eure’s leadership and the fact that his office sought to ensure that their first report looks at issues from a systemic perspective that will help improve the NYPD. This report shines a bright light on issues that community members and advocates have long known. There are serious problems that need to be addressed, including lack of meaningful and timely discipline for officers who engage in forms of excessive and deadly force.

"NYPD bans on chokeholds and other practices are meaningless if officers aren't held accountable for continuing to use them. This report sounds the alarm bell for greater disciplinary reform and accountability at the NYPD. Until officers face real consequences for the use of excessive and deadly force, officers won’t change their behavior, and will be allowed to operate above the law.

"We call on Mayor de Blasio and Commissioner Bratton to take immediate action to ensure that all officers who engage in misconduct, including excessive force, are properly disciplined and face real and timely consequences.  The lack of discipline and accountability at the NYPD makes it harder for the police to build trust with communities they are sworn to serve and protect,” said Priscilla Gonzalez, Organizing Director of Communities United for Police Reform (CPR).
