Governor’s Subway Plan Slammed by Communities United for Police Reform

In response to Governor Hochul’s subway safety plan, Communities United for Police Reform (CPR) issued the following statement from CPR spokesperson Ileana Méndez-Peñate (she/her), Program Director of Communities United for Police Reform.

“We know for a fact that more policing does not keep us safe, but Governor Hochul’s new subway plan ignores that basic fact and puts New Yorkers in harm's way. Stop-and-frisk and police misconduct cases are at their highest rate in a decade in New York City, and Governor Hochul’s misguided plan will only exacerbate racial profiling and abusive policing of Black and Latinx New Yorkers.

Rather than investing in necessary public safety infrastructure, like mental health services, affordable housing, and health care, the governor is condoning harassment, racial profiling and abuse of New Yorkers by increasing police presence and expanding police authority in our subways.”
